It draws on over two decades of research and accounts from almost 1,000 participants. It addresses itself to all who have an interest in music and what music can mean.

Disappointment with this state of affairs was the basic motivation for the Strong Experiences with Music (SEM) project. This chapter describes what reactions may occur in particularly strong experiences with music, explores which factors can elicit such reactions, and considers what consequences the experience may have for the individual. Gabrielsson relates the theme of strong experiences with music (SEM) to the notion of peak experiences – which, according to Maslow (1968), could be most easily attained through sex and music (including dancing) – as well as to Panzarella's (1980) distinction between different dimensions of intense music listening experiences.
